In the digital age, with instant communication and expression universally available (and without the media gatekeepers and daily news cycles of the recent past) we are aware now, more than ever, of how chaotic and ridiculous things are. Paradoxically, traditional artists deploying the traditional pictorial mode of realism—a window into an alternate or superior reality— may be the best people to point out the unreal core at the center of consensus reality, and, through satire, to help us deal (square ourselves) with it. Six Bay Area figurative painters illustrate, with wit, wisdom, imagination, and considerable humor, what a long, strange trip it’s always been (as Bosch and Bruegel knew too well), and probably always will be.
